This is your big day, your wedding day — you will be looking at your wedding photographs and videos for many years to come. Hairstyles may go out of style but a healthy smile will not.

How to achieve that beautiful, whitest smile on your wedding day? Here are some tips:

1. Avoid staining foods and drinks the day before the wedding. If possible, quit smoking. Brush using whitening toothpaste nd if you have bleaching trays, use them the night before wedding. You may want to speak with your dentist about whitening for you and your partner. There are two ways of teeth whitening.

  • Tray based — the gel is placed in ultra thin custom made trays that are worn for one hour for 7-10 days. Upper and lower arch can be treated separately.
  • Surgery based — this procedure is done only in the clinic; known also as power bleaching or laser. Here, more concentrated gels are applied directly to your teeth and accelerated with heat or light. Done for only 1 hour. I suggest bleaching should be done a week before the wedding.

2. If you have caps or crown, check if they are loose, or if they’re discolored or darkened at the gingival area. If so, visit your dentist immediately for a replacement. Veneers are good replacement. So is a metal free crown as it looks perfectly like the shape of your natural teeth and the shade can be adjusted according to what you prefer. This is one of the easiest ways to alter shape, size, position and shade of your teeth. They are strong and will not discolor for years. Veneers greatly improve the appearance of your smile.

3. Tooth filling can also be replaced if it’s discolored. Silver fillings can be changed to tooth colored ones. I suggest replacement after whitening to match with the new shade of your teeth.

4. Lastly, avoid embarrassment on your wedding day — of course you don’t want to be remembered as the wedding couple with bad breath. Brush and floss correctly to remove bacteria. You can also clean your tongue using your toothbrush or a tongue scraper that can reach up to the back of your tongue. And use mouthwashes that contain Chlorine Dioxide as this breaks down bacteria that cause your mouth clean. Do not waste your money on mouthwashes that contain mostly alcohol as these dry your mouth making the smell worse. Also avoid spicy foods, onions and garlic a day before your wedding.

If these simple steps don’t work, visit your dentist so that teeth and gums can be cleaned professionally.

These are helpful tips for your wedding day, but remember, when you’re in love and happy, it will surely bring out that beautiful, radiant smile.
