Listen up, picky eaters. Is your idea of adventurous a brownie…with nuts? Branch out and let your taste buds explore tasty, new dishes the next time you’re out. You won’t regret it!
Sashimi
What it is: Thin slices of fresh raw seafood like tuna (maguro), salmon (shake), shrimp (ebi), or squid (ika).
Body benefits: Seafood is a lean protein, so it’s low-cal, keeps you feeling full, and builds muscle. As long as it’s fresh, you don’t have to worry about it not being cooked. It’s also low in cholesterol, which is good for your body.
If you’re daring: Try the uni sushi, which is sea urchin. It has a unique melt in the mouth texture and isn’t too pleasant to look at—but those who love it swear it’s delish! It’s also high in vitamin A, E, and is an excellent energy booster.
Liver Barbecue
What it is: Depending on the way it’s cooked and where it’s taken from, liver can actually be considered an expensive delicacy (think foie grais, which is duck liver, or liver pate). It can come from ducks, pigs, chickens, beef, or geese. The most common type served in Filipino restos or street corners are either grilled or fried barbecue style or are mixed in with stews like menudo.
Body benefits: It’s a protein-rich food, so it helps you have more energy. It’s also an important building block of bones, muscles, and blood. Liver is said to be high in iron and a concentrated source of vitamin A and B as well.
Words of caution: Because liver is an internal organ, it is high in cholesterol. It can have good nutritional benefits as long as you eat in moderation though.
Just a tip on trying out new foods:
Be open. When ordering something new, try asking for recommendations from friends or asking the waiter how it’s cooked so you can have a better idea. Try taking a small bite first before you decide if you like it or not.
