The Truth About Metabolism

Wednesday, December 13th, 2006

When you exercise, your body requires more energy so your metabolism increases in order to supply it. Aerobic exercise that increases the heart rate can raise metabolism while you’re exercising—while also reducing body fat and increasing lean muscle mass. Experts recommend at least 20 minutes of continued aerobic exercise (like running, biking, badminton and dancing) that keeps your heart rate up.

Metabolism is simply the process your body goes through to turn calories into energy, but the term is often misused. See if you can separate fact from fiction below.

1. Skinny people have a faster metabolism
FICTION When you eat less or skip meals, your body thinks it’s starving, so it slows down your metabolism to make the calories you do take in last longer. If you want to lose weight, keep your metabolism steady by choosing foods with fewer calories (pretzels instead of chips) rather than eating less or skipping meals.

3. Your body’s metabolic rate is different at different times of the day
FACT Your metabolism is slowest when you are sleeping and fastest after eating or exercising. That’s why breakfast is important—eating in the morning tells your body that it’s time to start burning calories. If you don’t eat, your metabolism will still operate in night mode (slowly!).

Gift For The Soul

Wednesday, December 13th, 2006

Fill your life with these blessings that make for a truly meaningful season.#1: Time alone. Life’s filled with people. Those who have it in for you, those only want what’s best for you, some who need you, and others you need in return. Harmony is key, but not if it’s always at the expense of what you really want. And sometimes you’ll only discover what that is if you ask yourself what you would do, think and feel if no one else was around to sway you. So promise yourself some me time—and make it stick. Swim a few laps or watch the clouds roll by. Revel in your thoughts and feelings and your life’s passions will unfold.

#2: Thanksgiving. Life sucks—sometimes. Other times, it’s pretty darn swell if you bothered to notice. Look back on the year that was and say thank you for all the good that did happen. And don’t forget the small stuff like the smell of coffee or fat-free desserts. Better yet, imagine life without these simple pleasures.

#3: Forgiveness. Anger and resentment are ugly words. They’re even uglier feelings. But here’s a secret: letting go and forgiving others doesn’t just let them off the hook—it gives you a sense of closure and peace as well. And while you’re at it, be less judgmental of your own transgressions. You’ll be amazed at how different the world seems once you’ve eased up on yourself.

Small Change

Want a dramatically different look? Try trimming your bangs to eyebrow-length. Choppy, layered bangs are hot right now. Don’t have the dough for a salon cut? Then do it yourself! Hair pros say the best asymmetric bangs should look like they’ve been cut on your own. Gather hair between your index and middle fingers, and cut the hair below it. Move your fingers every inch-and-a-half to guide your snipping along the way.
